A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step...

Sometimes the hardest part of satisfying those itchy feet is taking that first step and actually doing something.

As someone who has done their fair share of wandering I know only too well that there is only so long you can ignore the little voice urging you to go on the next adventure.

I suppressed mine for about a year before succumbing and actually giving it some serious thought.

South America is somewhere I have wanted to travel to for years, but timing or other factors have never been right. In June I will be 30, for some people getting married, buying a house or starting a family are things they wish to do before reaching this particular milestone. However, for me it has been to finally go to South America.

At the end of last year I left my job in public relations and started turning my dream into a reality.

I have spent the last few months identifying the countries and places I'd like to visit and generally getting prepared.

If there is one bit of advice I can give it is to never underestimate how long it might take you to get your jabs etc. From previous experience I made sure I gave myself plenty of time and it paid off as I had a bit of drama, which I'm sure resulted in me being known as the 'rabies woman' at the local chemist.

In three days time I will be leaving for Buenos Aires where my adventure will begin.
